316L stainless steel is the standard fabrication material for superyacht galley surfaces, sinks and equipment housings, specified for its superior corrosion resistance in the marine environment.
What is 316L Stainless Steel?
316L is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel alloy. The molybdenum content distinguishes it from 304 grade stainless. The "L" suffix denotes low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), improving weldability and reducing sensitisation-related corrosion at weld joints.
Why 316L is Specified for Superyacht Galleys
Salt air, salt water and cleaning chemicals containing chlorine attack standard 304 stainless steel, causing pitting corrosion. The molybdenum in 316L significantly improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting — making it the correct specification for any fabricated element in a marine galley environment.
316L vs 304
304 stainless is adequate for dry, interior domestic environments. It is not appropriate for marine fabrication exposed to salt air or chlorinated cleaning chemicals. The cost premium for 316L over 304 is modest relative to fabrication cost, and the performance difference in a marine environment is significant.
Surface Finish
316L fabrication in superyacht galleys is typically supplied in satin (brushed) finish — number 4 finish — which is practical to clean, hides minor scratches and presents well aesthetically.
